Only 19 per cent of office workers are expected to not gain weight over the course of the year due to their healthy lifestyle choices, according to a new report. Unfortunately, the remaining office workers are predicted to gain an estimated 9lb. The reason for this is that, on average, office workers consume 3,295 calories every day, which is between 795 and 1,295 more than the recommended amount. These unnecessary calories most often happen for one of the following reasons:
- Colleagues offering treats
- Choosing unhealthy breakfasts
- Stress eating
- Ordering out
To help manage your waistline while you’re behind the desk this year, consider the following healthy tips:
- Schedule walking meetings.
- Take a five-minute walk around the office every 30 minutes to stretch and relax.
- Practise good posture by adjusting your chair until your feet are flat on the ground.
- Take the stairs instead of the lift.
- Choose healthier snacks, such as fruit and nuts, rather than sugary sweets.
- Say ‘no’ to office treats, if a colleague offers you one.
- Stand up and stretch every 30 minutes.
- Drink more water.
Outside of the office, you should try to eat a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables, oily fish and wholegrains. You should supplement that by regularly exercising for at least two and a half hours every week, which can include a brisk walk around the neighbourhood.
