So Yahoo is the latest “big name” company to fall victim of a cyber attack, with a loss of client data including email addresses and passwords.
The trouble is, it’s not just big businesses that are being attacked. OK, it is alleged that this attack was “state sponsored” so may have been very deliberate but there are countless more attacks being made on small businesses every day using automated hacking software. These attacks are not targeted but just try to break into systems at random until they find a weakness.
What could happen if your systems were breached? Perhaps it might just be inconvenience, but it could be damage to your systems or loss of business. What if your systems then pass on viruses to your contacts? If you hold client data – addresses, email addresses and bank details for example, you may be required to go through a notification process to all of them.
“We’ve got a firewall” you say…. but don’t you think Yahoo, LinkedIn and Adobe had very sophisticated security and they’ve all suffered breaches.
So please review your IT security, consider a company policy, have all laptops, portable devices and memory sticks encrypted, and consider cyber insurance which can provide support and financial protection to your business.
