You may have seen media coverage about driving licence details going online, which will mean the paper counterpart document will no longer be necessary from mid 2015.
Currently insurers have to take motoring conviction details on trust. Some motorists are less than honest so don’t pay a high enough premium. Others often “over declare” and provide details of convictions that no longer need to be disclosed so may end up paying too high a premium.
With a driving licence number, the new online system will enable insurers to get accurate information from DVLA and price all our premiums correctly. Those with poor records will pay more but most of us will pay less.
