3D and 4D baby scanning

So when setting up a 3D and 4D baby scanning centre, what types of insurance are required?

We seem to be developing a reputation as the broker to talk to about insurance for 3D and 4D baby scanning centres.  A common question is “What insurance do we need?”

Well firstly, it’s important to point out that every business is different which is why we like to have a conversation with the owner to find out about how the centre operates and what services it provides, so we can outline the potential insurance that might be needed.

Typically, the insurance required falls under three main headings:

Assets

The biggest investment you are probably making is your ultrasound equipment and when this can cost tens of thousands of pounds, it’s best to have it properly insured against such things as fire, water damage, malicious damage and even even accidental damage.

But you also need to consider your stock and other equipment that you own or are responsible for. So that’s not only things like tables, desks and computer equipment but things like fixtures that your landlord may require you in insure under your lease.  We would therefore usually recommend a business package insurance policy

Liabilities

If you will be employing staff, the law requires you to have employers’ liability insurance so that if a member of staff or a self employed sonographer is injured at work, then your insurance will cover your legal costs and injury awards made against you.

With members of the public visiting your premises, there is the risk that they could be injured (perhaps tripping over a cable). Public liability insurance will cover the costs of defending you should this happen and it will also pay any awards that are made against you.

Many 3D and 4D baby scanning clinics sell or give away baby toys to their clients and visitors.  If you do this, it’s really important to have this shown in your business description on your policy and also that you have products liability insurance.  This protects your business should someone be injured by these products.

Finally, even though your sonographer will have personal medical indemnity cover, this will NOT protect your business should a client allege that they have been harmed by your medical procedure.  A limited company has what is called vicarious liability for the acts of its staff and others  and it is therefore best for the company to have its own medical malpractice insurance.

Financial

As your business develops, you will become more reliant on a regular flow of clients to keep up your income. So if this income flow gets interrupted by say, a fire or burst pipe, meaning your equipment is damaged, then business interruption insurance will make up the lost income.

This is just a summary of the insurances you might need.  As mentioned above, every business is different, so if you have an ultrasound or 3D and 4D baby scanning clinic and would like a no obligation chat and quotation, then please contact Andy Phillips on 01527 834696 or by email aphillips@apinsurance.co.uk.
