That time of year is here; the vibrant green leaves turn crimson, the evenings once again bring dusk, starry skies, and the first signs of crisp air reminds us that yes, we really should have worn that coat!

Autumn is well and truly upon us and that means one thing…winter is next.

Here are our hot tips for the cold season:

  • Burglars love a house full of presents so keep them out of sight and make sure you lock all doors and windows and set the alarm, if you have one
  • Check that outside security lights are operating correctly
  • Check locks on outbuildings. They may have been left unlocked and you’re less likely to go out to them in the coming weeks
  • Clear debris from gutters and gullies
  • Check that downpipes are running freely. I discovered a blockage at the point where I have a divert valve to a water butt. But take care when clearing this – a few gallons of water may suddenly decide to spray all over you!
  • Get any flat roofs checked by a builder. You may find that this is a specific policy condition.
  • Get your boiler serviced now – don’t risk having to spend the winter months shivering away under a blanket.
  • If it needs it, have your car serviced and check tyres for wear

We know it’s a bit of a long homework list – but we have to look after our loyal readers!
