What is more important in business in 2015, skills or connections?
We all know the saying ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know that counts’. Before the introduction of social media it was definitely the case that the person with the better connections had a massive advantage over everyone else. Social Media has connected the world together and made it much easier to connect with people of influence, preferred suppliers, and customers who you would love to work with. So therefore, has this old saying been diluted a little?
Nothing beats having real world relationships and business connections with people – if you ‘actually’ know these people, it is obviously still a huge advantage. What social media has given us is the pathway to connect to the right people, so has made it a little bit easier to start to build these connections and get noticed by the right people.
For me, I think this old saying is still very relevant today and has stood the test of time. It’s all about relationships, relationships, relationships. Certainly, having the right skills to enable you to be amazing at what you do is very important. But if you haven’t got the right connections, it makes developing a financially successful business very difficult.
