If you have a home or business contents insurance policy, then you will more than likely have to comply with certain security requirements. But do you know what they are?
I would say that the majority of new clients I go to see are not meeting their insurer’s requirements, with the result that they risk having an insurance claim reduced or refused. So, what should you do?
Firstly, find out what your insurer’s requirements are, either by checking your policy documents, contacting your insurer or talking to your broker. Then compare what you have with what they want. This will vary from insurer to insurer but the most common gaps I have found recently are as follows:
- A 5 lever mortice deadlock not having the recessed boxed striking plate in the door frame.
- All accessible windows not having key operated window locks. Remember an accessible window could be on the first floor if it has a flat roof below it for example.
- A business premises padlock not being a 5 lever closed shackle type.
- Fire exits not fitted with hinge bolts.
- Most worryingly, an insurer requiring an alarm but either none is fitted or the alarm is not up to specification.
