With children going off to university, perhaps for the first time, insurance to cover their belongings is probably not the first thing on your mind. However, whilst many home contents insurance policies now include cover for belongings of students at college or university, there are a few things to watch out for, as highlighted below:
- The cover may be subject to an overall limit so make sure this is sufficient to replace everything they have with them.
- A single article limit may apply so for example, an expensive laptop computer may need to be specified.
- The cover may exclude theft unless someone breaks in to their room so make sure they are aware how important it is to keep their door locked.
- Whilst the policy may cover belongings in their room, they may not be insured when out of the building. If not, the policy may need an “all risks” or “personal belongings” extension.
- If they have a pedal cycle, make sure the policy has a “pedal cycles” extension and that the limit is sufficient. Most insurers will require that cycles be kept in a locked building or locked to an immobile object when not in use.
Check your policy before a loss occurs not after! If you are in doubt, contact your insurance broker or insurer.
